What’s in a Name?

For us? A lot. I find it interesting how everyone goes about naming children differently. What does it include for Austin and Amy Smith?

1. We like to name our children after someone who is a righteous example.

2. We like our children to have one of their own names.

3. We like the name meanings to fit who we’d like them to be and their personality.

Kory David Smith didn’t take us too long to come up with, the problem was agreeing. Austin wanted Kory to be his first name, and I felt his first name should be his own name. After a lot of prayer we finally agreed on Kory David. Here is the name meaning/where it comes from.

Kory – is after Kory Dopp. Austin’s best friend and his rock during his teenage years. Kory helped Austin make good choices, and Austin wanted a friend like him for Cadence. We found out later that Kory Dopp was also named after a good friend of his parents. Kory means God’s Peace. I love the meaning! I think it fits our little contented Kory perfectly.

David – We were flipping through the bible looking for names that went well with Kory and David was one of the final names. It just sounded the best. But I admire so much the faith of young David as he goes up against Goliath. I always emphasize the young part. In fact, as we were facing big trials because he was born little in the hospital, it was the first bible story I recounted to him. Just like young david, our little Kory David is surviving. Kory Dopp’s mom says “Kory’s are survivors” (and I’m a believer). David means beloved and that is the same name meaning as his mother’s name (Amy). That tugged at my heart and made me love the name even more.

Like Father Like Son/ Breakfast in Bed

Maybe I have posted about this before, I can't really remember. Either way, it's the same as it has always been. Austin and Cadence sleep exactly the same. It's so funny to me! Some of the weirdest positions and it never fails - they are exactly the same!

Speaking of sleeping funny, Cadence has had the hardest time going to bed when we put him down lately. We will put him in bed at 7:30 and he doesn't fall asleep until about 9:30, with continued calls for "mommy" during the entire two hours. The other night, I tried everything to get him to sleep sooner. About when I was done trying, he announced he wanted to eat (at about 9 o'clock). After finishing a piece of toast (his favorite new food), he asked for another. When I saw his pillow about an hour later, I just assumed it was his way of hoping asking for more would get him out of bed again. It brings a whole new meaning to the phrase "breakfast in bed".

Aunt Maria's 22nd Bday

Aunt Maria turned 22 today! We are so happy to have her in our lives. Last year, I made a Dr. Seuss cake and I wasn't really sure how I could top that! But we ended up with a great opportunity to help our parents w/ her gift.

A CAR!! We used some southwest credits we had to fly her home and she'll be driving it back to Utah with our dad in April. I also made her favorite cake (though nothing extravagant) - yellow cake and chocolate frosting. Her friends ended up throwing her a surprise party, plus she had a pedicure and went out to dinner. I'd say it was better than she anticipated and I'm so happy!! We are all so blessed to have her in our lives.

Another trip to the Zoo

Cadence and I went to the zoo with our friends - the Page's. Melanie and I are good friends and it's so nice our boys play well together. I woke up and realized it was the last Wednesday of the month and entrance would be free. It was BEAUTIFUL outside. I invited them to go with literally less than an hour before I was thinking of leaving and they jumped on board! It was so fun to have buddies to go with and they used to have passes, so they knew where all the good stuff was at Hoggle Zoo. Here are some pictures of our adventure!

This cheetah was pacing back and forth continually. We walked back by him 30 minutes later and he was still doing it!

Our last stop was the camels. It started to snow just as we got there! It was such perfect timing. We were there just long enough to enjoy the weather and the animals. It was so fun to share our time with friends too (and what troopers joining at the last minute)!

February Fever & Fun

This month has been a whirlwind! It amazes me how, even though it's two days shorter than most months, it's seems to fly by (and I'm still posting about Christmas)! We just finished our birthing class, and are now having more frequent appointments with our midwife! The time is getting nearer and we are excited for our little Kory to join our family.
Meanwhile, Amy was called as the Young Women President in our ward, which has given Cadence lots of opportunities for play dates (we are grateful for good ward members so willing to watch him), and left little time for blogging. Here are a couple of camera catchers though.

Family Dinner

When I was in college we used to, pretty regularly, have family dinners with all of the cousins at school. It's been awhile, but I'm glad that Maria and Ross decided we needed one! We had a delicious dinner and some fun watching Cade try to juggle afterward!
